The papers of the John Carter Brown Library. These records document the establishment of the John Carter Brown Library, from the first book, purchased by Nicholas Brown in July 1769 to 1904, when the library building was dedicated on the campus of Brown University. The bulk of the correspondence belongs to John Carter Brown who conceived the idea of focusing his collecting to “Americana,” but also includes the correspondence of his father, Nicolas Brown, and his son, John Nicolas Brown.

John Carter Brown of Providence, Rhode Island, began to decisively collect books about America in 1848, although he had started collecting rare books, “the favorite pastime of wealthy noblemen” much earlier. An admirer of Old World traditions, Brown focused upon European voyages and travels, as well as books that provided a background for European expansion.
